Earn a General Education or Liberal Arts Elective
All participants of a Be World Ready International Field Study, beginning in Fall 2023, will be required to enrol in and successfully complete the mandatory Be World Ready course. The course you will be enroled in is SOCL 1128 at the diploma level, or IDPL 9103 at the degree level. This is a 3 credit Niagara College course qualifying for general or liberal elective credit.
Similar to other college courses, it involves assignments, assessments, and activities, and a strong committed attitude of active participation. This course is considered a hybrid course, with in-person, synchronous, and asynchronous components. During your IFS experience, you will have assignments and tasks that must be completed as well. The course will be delivered in an accelerated 9-week format, which ends the week after you return from your IFS.
The cohort of this course will include the peers you will be travelling to your IFS destination with, and other students who will be participating in IFS’ to other destinations during the same break week. Only students who are going abroad during their break week with Be World Ready are currently offered this course.
You will have a Be World Ready D2L Brightspace course made available at the start of term like any other course you take and a formal teaching and learning plan (TLP) is provided to help you understand your learning journey and obligations throughout the course.
During your application process for the BWR IFS of your choice, you will be asked to indicate which level (diploma or degree) elective course you will need.
It is not possible to participate in an International Field Study without enroling in the mandatory Be World Ready course.
Please note: This course is mandatory for those attending an International Field Study. Similar to other college courses, it involves assignments and activities, some of which you will need to do while you’re away so that you have all the information you need to complete the assignments when you return. Prior to your departure, ensure that you review all information found on the Blackboard course and that you are aware of your academic obligations to successfully complete this course before, during, and after your travels. There are no additional fees associated with being enrolled in this course.
Please be aware that the rules of a regular course (in terms of dropping a course, course work, and due dates) will apply. Students who do not successfully complete the course risk not meeting the grant requirements, which could result in being charged back the full value of the grant (up to $2500, depending on the IFS). Please review the Grant Requirements section of the IFS webpage.
The Be World Ready team is not responsible for grading your course-work, nor ensuring you meet all requirements as this will be under the School of Academic and Liberal Studies. This course is to be treated the same as any other course taken for the completion of your program. If you have an issue with the completion of your course work, you will need to reach out to the Associate Dean of the academic area.

You will have a Be World Ready Brightspace course and MS Teams page made available at term start like any other course you take, and a formal teaching and learning plan (TLP) will be provided to help you understand your learning journey and obligations over the duration of the course. The course will be a full term course.
Currently, as of Fall 2023 term, the delivery of the Be World Ready course is largely online with 2 hours synchronous online learning and 1 hour online asynchronous, and occasional in-person classes. As pre-departure training will be delivered in person, you will be provided the dates in advance for when you will be expected to join the cohort in person for this training or any other important sessions that are best delivered face to face. The 2 hour synchronous period will be used to facilitate any face to face learning delivery.
There are no additional fees associated with being enrolled in this course if you are over your course load. You may see an outstanding balance when you are enrolled, but it will be manually removed. There is no action needed on your part for this. The Be World Ready team and Enrollment Services will work closely together to remove these alerts over the registration period.
No. All pre-departure training and grant requirements will be incorporated into the course. However, you must fully and successfully complete the Be World Ready course to remain eligible for the financial grants associated with Be World Ready programs. This includes all students, whether requiring a general elective for credit or not.
Yes! You will receive 3 credits for either a Liberal Elective or General Elective course, depending in your program level.
Yes. All students travelling with Be World Ready on an International Field Study must take this course, as pre-departure training and grant requirements are now incorporated into the course and no longer offered outside of the course.
